"Teddy" A short story in the making. Pt. 1

(04.19.2004 - 11:59 am)

There sits an abandoned teddy-bear atop the trash heap. He's missing an eye, stitches are weak and an his stuffing is starting to come out. He once felt love and was squeezed and held tight every night. He once was an integral part of a little boys life. Not now though, not anymore. He's been cast aside like so much rubbish. He sits there amongst the onion peelings and coffee grounds, looking out through the garbage, absolutely certain that the little boy will return for him. He loves me, I knows! The bear declares to no one in particular. He will come and get me, you just wait and see.

The dust begins to rise around the trash piles, and a big car stops in front of the heap the bear is. Oh I hope that's him! the bear thinks. He tries to move away the broken eggshell stuck to his fur so that he might look more presentable to the boy. It wasn't him though, it was just a man dropping off more garbage. The bear winced as more foul smelling trash landed on top of him, nearly covering him up.

A tear welled up in the corner of his eye, but he wiped it away, because everybody knows that bears are very strong and he didn't want the boy to see him crying should he pull up, which he would any minute now, he was sure of it.

As the sun began to set on the dump, the little bear's mind begin to wander. He started thinking about when he was at the little boy's home, in his bedroom. He missed being there, waiting patiently for the boy to come play with him. He remembered when the little boy started school, and how he explained to him that he wouldn't be there all day to play with him anymore. That was a sad day. He remembered siting on the bed after the mother would make it up. She would always sit him proudly on top of the boy's favorite pillow so that he would be seen as soon as the little boy came home from school. It was the very first thing he would do. They were so happy together, and the bear never imagined that there would ever be a day that they would be apart.

That day did come however. The little boy made really good grades in school, starred on the baseball team too! It was about that time that the bear was put on the dresser. He wasn't allowed to sleep with the boy anymore. He didn't really understand why. He hadn't done anything wrong that he knew of, but he guessed that he must have, because the boy rarely even noticed him sitting there. He sat there for months without being touched. He missed the cuddling the most. Being held tightly all night was the best!

Now all he had was this trash heap. There was no one to love him, or hold him, or tell him stories.

The sun dipped behind the tree line and the dump settled in for the night. The bear shivered a bit. He wasn't sure if it was that it was starting to get cold, or if the thought of night made him shake. At night the animals came to the dump. Wild dogs, coyotes and rats. The rats were the worst. They slowly nibbled on everything. That's were his eye had gone. A rat ate it right off! He tried to make himself smaller. He started thinking of his little boy again, and slowly drifted to sleep.
